GRE - The GRE is a computerized standardized admissions test required for many liberal arts masters and doctoral programs. more info> GMAT* - The Graduate Management Admissions Test, GMAT, is a three and a half hour computerized standardized test used by business school admissions departments to determine acceptance to their program. more info> LSAT - The LSAT is a paper-based standardized test required by law schools and is given four times a year on set dates. It is a half-day test that provides a standard measure of reading and verbal reasoning skills that law schools use as one of several factors in assessing applicants. more info> SAT and ACT - The SAT test is a three hour and forty-five minute standardized admissions test used to rate applicants to undergraduate programs in colleges and universities. Nearly every 4 year school requires an SAT score or an ACT to be considered for admissions. The SAT is offered 7 times a year, and there are 3 sections: Critical Reading, Math, and Writing. Each section is scored from 200 to 800. The lowest score you can get on the SAT is a 600; the highest score is a 2400. The ACT has become more prevelant in recent years, especially since the SAT is now longer and most colleges accept the ACT in lieu of the SAT. One great advantage is that you can take the test several times and choose which score to submit. In February 2005 an optional essay was added to the ACT. The ACT has an English, Reading, Math and Science section. In February 2005, an optional 30 minute essay was added. Some schools may require the essay, so be sure to ask before you take the test. Actual testing time is 2 hours and 55 minutes; but with the added 30 minute Writing Test, total testing time is 3 hours, 30 minutes. A composite score between 1 and 36 is given based on the average of 4 sections. Each of the three Steps of the USMLE complements the others; no Step can stand alone in the assessment of readiness for medical licensure. Because individual medical licensing authorities make decisions regarding use of USMLE results, physicians seeking licensure should contact the jurisdiction where they intend to apply for licensure to obtain complete information.
