CRAMMING FOR THE SATs or GMATs? TRY HYPNOSIS.
BARA SAPIR’S HOLISTIC TEST-PREP METHODS ARE OUTSCORING THE BIG BOYS

NEW YORK - November 23, 2005 – Preparing for the SATs used to mean memorizing long lists of vocabulary words and math equations, and preparing for the GMATs, LSATs and GREs used to be about mental acrobats around the new-fangled question types never before seen in the classroom or workplace. But Bara Sapir, a fourteen-year veteran of the test-prep business and former instructor for The Princeton Review, has a different approach. She uses methods like hypnosis, visualization, and energy work -- not to mention free massages for new signups -- to relax her students and prepare them for the high-stress environment of the GMAT, GRE, SAT, LSAT and other standardized tests. And it's working. Sapir's students have upped their GMAT/GRE/SAT scores by as much as 350 points, with an average increase of 175 points. LSAT students have average improvements of 15 points. Sapir’s students go on to the top schools -- Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, London School of Business, Stanford, University of Pennsylvania and Yale.

More and more people are interested in using hypnosis for personal change and health as they become increasingly aware of the practice. Oprah, Newsweek, Psychology Today and many other media have written about the benefits of hypnosis with weight loss, pain management, performance enhancement, mental health and other areas. Sports psychologists, professional athletes, top students and others know that a proper mind-set is crucial to doing things well.
Sapir’s revolutionary approach is simple. She first identifies each test-taker’s learning style and patterns of error. She customizes a program for each student using a comprehensive body of study materials and resources that complement traditional study methods. And then, if a student has issues with anxiety, stress or concentration (and many test-takers do), Sapir will use tools like hypnosis to tap the sub-conscious mind. This last part can make a crucial difference to test-takers who have peaked with traditional study methods, but need additional points to make it into the top schools.

It is no surprise that Sapir is breaking the mold in the $960 million test-prep industry. Her students are outscoring those of established players like Kaplan and The Princeton Review. Sapir says, “How well you do anything is largely mental. Having all parts of your mind totally and congruently oriented toward reaching your goals can skyrocket your performance level. Just ask Yogi Berra who once said about baseball, ‘Ninety percent of this game is half mental.’”
Sapir is the founder of Test Prep New York. She has a Masters degree in Education from the Jewish Theological Seminary. She also has a Masters degree in Art History and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, both from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. She is a certified hypnotist and published author. Sapir lectures and teaches in the U.S. and abroad and has been an adjunct faculty member at Montclair State University.
